Mutual Funds

A mutual fund is a pool of investments that is owned by many people and managed by professional portfolio managers. Investors purchase shares or units within a fund and that money is used by the portfolio manager to invest in a variety of assets. The mutual fund prospectus clearly outlines in which types of assets the fund will invest, and how much risk will be assumed.

The main appeal of mutual funds is that smaller investors can receive the same expertise and purchasing power as the large institutions. Instead of dealing with market timing and small purchases and sales, individual investors allow professional portfolio managers monitor the fund performance and make decisions.
